Read MoreAs my time in Barcelona was coming close to the end, I wanted to make every moment count. To enjoy last breakfast that I had in the city, I returned to where I fell in love with Barcelona when I got here several days ago. The same Pinotxo Bar in La Boqueria.
It was just after 10am, the market is still full of activities. Freshest seafood are still on display and being bought by customers. It was a mix of many locals and some early rise tourists to come indulge their first meal in the market and not at their hotel.
The bar was expectedly packed, as I wandered a couple times in front of the bar. The same staff saw me and gave me a welcoming wink. Right then, I am no longer a tourist. There was a connection with the local restaurant, market and people. It was a rare experience that I find during traveling - feeling like I am part of them.
After my seat was carefully secured by the staff, I am as sure as the first time I was here for them to serve me whatever they like. But first, I need to have one of that, as I pointed to a crusty flaky pastry that seemed to be or have been on everyone's plate. This delicious combination of a donut, croissant and pastry cream is called Xuixo and is a Catalan specialty. It is deep-fried, filled with Catalan creme and dusted with crystallized sugar. Although it was a fairly safe bet, my gut told me I had to try it even though I have no idea what it is. This is the kind of adventurous soul that I hope lives in your and my heart forever.
Unlike the first time I was here, a couple hours of work was waiting for me back at the hotel. I ordered a glass of cava to join me without any hesitation. I'm fairly convinced that was the Spanish way to go. A little let loose, a little let free.
My next journey on this table is chick peas and meat balls. This was certainly quite heavy for my taste for breakfast, but I'm game for it anyways. It was simple, flavorful and addicting. Occasionally, let's throw away my routine and habits, and embrace something new!
As usual, I topped off my breakfast with a strong coffee with milk. Cherished every sip as it was my last at this joint. Before I move on to make more memories in Barcelona, I had to commemorate the brief encounter and connection we had at this bar in the middle of the market. Compare to some other tourists sitting seats away from me, I already seemed like I knew what I was doing. That was when I realized I've planted seeds for myself in Barcelona, the next time I'm back, I will enjoy a xuixo here for sure.
Thank you Pinotxo Bar for letting me know I am welcomed if I open my arms too.
Admittedly, I went Tapas crazy in Barcelona, as there are limited options in Boston to indulge at. Plus, have you heard anyone that said they don't like Tapas?
